Kid friendly Halloween Sign {Joann craft challenge!)

easy, and fun sign, using only foam and googly eyes! #Joann #spookyspaces #myclevernest

Halloween is almost here! This weekend I made a fun Trick or Treat sign to dress up my porch! I got invited to join Joann Fabric and Craft stores' Celebrate the Season campaign and took on the challenge of coming up with a #spookyspaces themed DIY. You can see more fun Halloween ideas at Joann's site, here, and tons of blogger created projects on Pinteret by searching #spookyspaces.

See what I came up with!

I put together a fun, not-too-spooky sign using foam, googly eyes, and foam core. That's all! Oh, and a Funkin. But more on that in a second. It cost about $15 to make, and helped that most Halloween stuff is 70% off right now at Joann's!

Supplies:

  • Foamies foam sheets (I used regular and the glitter kind). As many colors as you like!

Sphell It Owt
To get my letters for the sign, I played around in Word until I found a font that was fatty, and would be easy to cut out. I settled on Copper Black, in bold, size 500. It's also nice that it comes standard with Word. :)

Originally I tried cutting the letters out of the foam board, but my results were less than pristine. There was no way to get clean edges using my box cutter on the foam board!

So I switched to the foam sheets.  I printed out my letters and traced over them so I could see the outline from the other side. I flipped over the paper and imprinted it on the foam by punching small holes with my pencil all the way around. I did it in reverse so the "good" side wouldn't have any pencil lead marks on it. If you know how to flip letters in the computer and print them, that would be a better option! Technology, technology these days.

When all the letters were cut out of the foam, I moved on to my Funkin. I got my $13 Funkin for just over $5, on clearance. I cut it in half using a big old serrated knife, and it worked like a charm!

I printed out the word "or" in Microsoft Himalaya, also a standard Word  font, size 500. I taped it onto my Funkin and marked the edges by punching it with my pencil, same technique as with the foam. I filled in the letters with a black sharpie.

I had planned to decorate each letter in a classic Halloween motif- slime, mummy, candy corn, witch, etc. I bought other stuff not pictured like plastic snakes, cheesecloth, and fake fur to glue onto the letters. I started with "slime", hot glue dripped onto the letter. It didn't go so well.

Bummer. I managed to melt and warp my foam letter. And it really did look spooky, but not in the planned out sort of way. I put it aside for the moment, not sure what to do, and moved on to  my "mummy". That one turned out pretty cute!

But after standing back and staring at my mangled "t" and mummy "r" for a couple seconds, and having the word "tortured" repeatedly come to mind, I decided to tweak things a bit. In my head the letters for my sign would have been much bigger, and better able to support more detailed stuff glued onto them. But since they were smaller, only about 4 inches tall, I needed a simpler approach.

And one that didn't involve melting anything.

I used just my colored foam and googly eyes and non-melting amounts of hot glue (10 points if you will picture that letter saying, "I'm meeeeelting, meeeelting!" like the evil witch of the west), and made my characters like I had planned.

Mummy, scarecrow, black cat, snake, ghost, wicked witch, Frankenstein... they're all there!

I laid out my letters and pumpkin on the foam core board, and marked out two "signs" on the top and bottom, and a hidden brace in the middle for my pumpkin.

Here is my board, cut and painted with my faux wood treatment. :) Just two brown colors put on with a foam brush.

I painted all the edges brown to hide some of the imperfections.

To hang it up outside, I poked a ribbon through both sides, long enough to hang from a nail on our porch.

Trick or treat! I was pleased it worked so well with my $5 fall wreath I got from Wal Mart a year ago, and real pumpkins from the grocery store.

Easy DIY: Herringbone Cork board

If you were wondering if I fell off the edge of the blogosphere, you might have been right. What have I been up to? The last few weeks have been the most intense diy-ing block of my whole year! From Andrew's 2nd birthday party, to decorating for my sister-in-law to be's wedding, to a fun Halloween project I'm working on in partnership with Joann Fabric!

As Ricky Recardo might say, ay ay ay.

Whew! I took a break from wedding decor and Halloween crafting to let you know I'm still alive, and to share an easy bulletin board update. It has been transformed from a normal boring cork board into a modern, herringbone celebrating, gold accented beauty!

I needed a functional works pace for my Mid Century Craigslist desk in the kitchen, and especially a bulletin board to pin bills, letters, and other important paper upon.

I bought a pack of these 12x12 cork board tiles from Target, not exactly sure what I would end up doing with them.

After some stewing, staring, and squinting at the cork tiles, I decided to try a herringbone pattern with painted cork "tiles". I marked out 16 smaller tiles on the large tile, each 6" by 1 1/2. I cut all the large tiles this way.

For my palette I chose gold, white, aqua, and a few custom mixes of seafoam.  It took two coats of regular craft paint to cover up the cork, brushing it on thick so it would sink into most of the little holes in the surface.

Once everything was painted and dry, I laid out a few trial patterns. I totally liked the randomness of the colors next to each other.

I hot glued each tile to a piece of cardboard. You could also use the back of a picture frame. I made sure my cardboard would fit into a frame I had laying around.

I started with the middle ones and worked my way to the outer edges, pressing HARD to smoosh the tiles as close to each other as possible. Note: there will be gaps between the tiles. Partly because cork board is made up of little flecks, and those flecks don't always cut perfectly straight. And partly because I didn't use geometry to make sure I was laying down the tiles perfectly square. Before I started gluing down the tiles I actually painted my cardboard piece in the dark aqua color. This helped later when the gaps were permanent. And instead of seeing brown cardboard underneath, it was the color of my tiles.

Once everything was stable, I went back around the edges with scissors and trimmed off all the extra cork.

And done! This was so easy, and fast. I love that it didn't have to be perfectly square or 100% even. It looks good from close up and far away. Gotta keep this craft in mind for the future!

If you get eyeball to eyeball with it, you can start to see some of the gappage. Not too bad, right?

Also cheering up my office space is this bright mini globe. A $9.99 find at Homegoods. Love!

This is the little painted pot that has gotten 15 thousand (THOUSAND!) views and over 7 thousand pins! Still loving it, and you can see lots more pictures of it at the link above. You guys are awesome :)

Evolution of a Room
I've come to terms with the notion that the rooms in my house will never truly be finished. They will morph and evolve as my style changes and as trends come and go. It's fun to see how different this room has looked, just in the past year we've lived here!

Version 2: later November '12

Version 3: October '13

I definitely like the current version best! It's finally getting my modern/ eclectic vibe with the aqua, yellow, and lime color scheme.

That's all for now. I promise I'll be back in regular contact from now on. I'm hoping to get the Joann Halloween craft done this weekend, in time to share with you next week!

Hope you have a great Saturday :)
