Living Room: I asked, you answered!

You know how you can stare at a room for so long you lose your objectivity? That was me.

I've been concentrating on decorating my living room so hard that I desperately needed an outside opinion. So I put it all out there and invited YOU into my living room for a style consultation. And boy, did you deliver!!

God Bless the Internet
I put up some pics of my living room and asked how I could make it better. Here they are, if you haven't already seen them.

I feel like I got 50 decorators from all walks of life to walk through my house and give me their 2 cents, and it was awesome!

Here's some of your advice:

"lots of beige going on. New or covered couches! And /or maybe a brightly colored rug instead of the neutral tone you have. Love the green cabinet idea." -Denay

Beige, beige... what beige? I only see the walls, couch, rug, and pillows.

"Recover the dark brown foot rest/coffee table with a bright complementing color. It's too heavy for the room. Maybe even replace it with a glass table for light and airy. More bright pillows." -Lancet

I can see what you mean. This ottoman is perfect for 19 month old Andrew's noggin bumpin' though, and so comfy you could sleep on it (although you might have to curl up like a dog). What to do!

"Add more color! More turquoise blue, yellows, and a little red. Also, maybe start with something simple, like adding some more colorful pillows. : )" -Monique

Amen. amen.

"family pictures!" -Kimberli

For some reason I never think of adding our pictures. Oh, yeah. I have a family!!

"there is just alot of beige. I think you have the solids covered, but a print would be go a long way, maybe cover 2 pillows in a print? And I agree that although not as practical, a brighter rug would help break up the beige." -Valerie (my sis-in-law!)

I still don't understand about all this beige. You trippin'.

"Change out or re-fabric the lampshades. Maybe even spray paint the lamp bases a bright color. I love spray paint right now!" -Stacey

I definitely hear you! But I'm so scared of patterns! It's true : /

Thanks, girlfriends. I owe you one :) I'm so glad I asked your opinion.

God bless Girlfriends! *finger snaps
You know whenever you ask a bunch of gals, "how does this look?", you're gonna get lots of different answers. For example, some of you loved my white curtains, others thought they were too blah. Some loved my framed art, others thought I needed a bigger statement piece. All in all, there were some clear winners, or should I say losers that are keeping me from my target style.

Do you agree?

The big "offenders" were-
#1 ottoman is too dark and heavy
This is news to me! I can see it now, but we love it so much. Maybe a reupholster and new feet?

#2 too much beige!
I know. I've been dealing with the Beige Wars since the beginning.

#3  tv stand style doesn't go with the room
I agree. It was freebie! I think a coat of paint could work some serious wonders.

#4 too many colors going on
I see that now too. The gray is still a neuteral, and the orange stool, what the heck, Alyssa?! Take it away!

#5 too many rugs
*shame. You called it. 2 rugs is weird. One's too big, one's too small, and both are blah colors! This needs to be addressed asap.

#6 not enough patterns
Confession: I am sooo skeerd of patterns! Hold my hand, please, k?

And there were some great ideas on what to do next!

#1 Add a yellow accent wall and white shelves over the love seat.
I am 1000% behind this idea. It's in the works as we speak!

#2 Repaint the tv cabinet a bright color.
Love. I think I might wait until the rest of the pieces are in place to decide on the color, and dare I say, pattern??

#3 Change out the three big frames for a gallery wall
I do love a gallery wall. And all my inspiration pictures seem to have one. I think you might win me over.

#4 Ditch the rugs for a colorful option
Amen. Yes, ma'am. Right away, ma'am.

#5 Lose the stool!
Talk about a photo bomb. Get that thing in the garage or something.

I'm still processing these suggestions. Haha, that's a lot to take in! I had so much fun reading your responses. I will definitely do this again next time I'm stuck!

Do you have any other ideas that would help bring this room to life? Speak your mind, girl!

Living Room Day 163: I need your help!!

Our living room represents the sum total of the last 3 years on this blog. My diy projects, crafts, and bargain finds have all found there way into this room, one way or another!

It's changed so much since I first showed it to you in November. I've been working hard and it's coming along, but I feel a little stuck... and I could use another pair of eyes!

Style Envy
This is the style that I luuuurve, and quite literally makes me drool a little. Ecclectic, vintage, colorful, and fun!

Now, see how close, or far off I am from my dream style. :)

Here it is on day one of our renting odyssey. A bare shell waiting to be brought to life. <<GZZT!>> That's how I imagine those paddle machine things sound.

A week later, I'd gotten it into somewhat functional shape. Lights and seating- check. Still looking rather sparse in here!

Fast-forward roughly 163 days, and here is how our living room looks today.

My aqua impressionistic DIY paintings make a nice focal point and splash of color on the big expanse over the couch.

The faux leather ottoman is a newcomer. I picked it up at Cort Furniture, who re-sells model home furniture, for under $200. My bubble wrap clock makes it's home above the fireplace. Thrifted frames, art, and knick knacks are slowly finding their way in here as well.eclectic modern living room. Ikea vivan curtains, fiddle leaf fig, world market pillows.

To the left is our TV and media cabinet. Next to it are the entry way table and napkin mirror. I'd love to mount the TV on the wall and add a cool shelf above it!

Supporting Characters
If my living room were a play, these next few elements are the much needed supporting players. There in the corner is Mr. Figgy, one of the first plants I've managed not to kill slowly.

My retro recycled $3 lamps. That's $3 for the pair! Hand-me-down bases I sprayed gray paired with mega clearanced Target shades! I'd love love to replace them, but not eager to dish out $50 a piece for new ones.

Meet the newest member of my flora family, Succy the succulent. He was a $3 find at Trader Joe's. I will try not to kill you, Succy.

And to round out the playbill, Ikea Vivan curtains in white, $9.99 for a pair of extra loooong panels. You can't beat that!
S.O.S comment with how I can spice up my living room! :)

Photoshop Fantasizing
I like where this room is going, but it still looks a bit "meh" to me. I'd love to add more unique elements, color, and SPICE!

When I'm imagining how to redo a room, I find myself making a rough sketch using a photo editor (Pic Monkey's my program of choice)! It helps me visualize how colors and elements will work out... or not!
rough sketch modern eclectic colorful living room.

How would gray couches, a yellow accent wall, and white shelves look in this space? What about chalkpainting the media cabinet Kelly Green?

What do you think of these ideas? What else would you suggest? Painting the furniture, recovering the couch...?

Future Plans
I would love your input. What would you suggest to make this room look better slash more professionally decorated? I'm all ears!! :) Seriously, I love being inspired by your ideas, so bring 'em!! Only thing is, we are renting, so we can only do cosmetic changes, and probably not paint.

Thanks :) I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Paper Fishy Mobile {no. don't do it. lol}

I'm doing penance for giving my son CDD (child decor deprivation). I'm a changed woman and working on giving him a bright and fun room that we will both enjoy! First on the docket- a playful paper fishy mobile for him to look at while he's drifting into nigh nigh land.

I Get an Idea
I've never made a mobile before, and I was nervous about dealing with all the physics and gravity and complex weight calculations of it all. I was so tempted to buy a cute mobile on Etsy. But at $50 a pop at the cheapest, I figured I best dive in, learn to sink or swim, and basically try not to drown.

I'm going to date myself, but whenever I hear the word "fishy" this classic Burt and Ernie sketch comes to mind.

In case you're at work or somewhere that blaring Sesame Street would be inappropriate, the gist of the clip is this.

Burt is attempting to fish in the classic form, you know, pole and hook and all. Ernie askes to show Burt his special method, namely, screaming "HERE FISHY FISHY FISHY!!" into the water. A fish comes leaping out of the water and Burt is dumbfounded. This happens several more times, and Burt wants a try. Ernie coaches him until Burt is screaming here fishy fishy at the top of his lungs and finally out jumps a shark (a talking shark. They have sharks in lakes?). Burt appropriately faints dead away.

Fishy Business
Here's how I made my very own mobile, for about $4!

  • cardstock
  • Fishing line or invisible string (I found mine in the beading aisle)
  • Clear plastic (got mine from fresh produce lids)
I freehanded a fishy silhouette out of a piece of junk mail cardstock and used it to trace a handful of colorful fishies out of scrapbook paper. If you don't feel like making your own, there are a ton of free fish silhouette icons online!
Paper fish mobile, looks cute!

They weren't perfect, but they didn't need to be. I took a breath, kept swimming, er, cutting, and swallowed my OCD back down.

I couldn't resist snapping a few pics of these fun fishy shapes :)

I used a small hole punch t make an "eye" in several fishies at a time. I totally dig their graphic, minimalistic look:).

For the "supports" I cut some plastic strips from the lids of clear plastic veggie containers. I particularly like the baby spinach packages, nice big lids! I cut 4 strips, roughly 7 x 3/4" each.

I Make A Plan
Now it got complicated.

I sketched out a plan of how I wanted to assemble my mobile. Looked simple enough. The curvy lines are the plastic pieces and the straight lines are the clear string.

Basically I threaded a big embroidery needle with fishing line, poked a hole in one end of a plastic strip, and tied a knot. At the free end of the string I tied a fishy. I can't tell you how long the string was. All I know is I had only enough patience for one go at this, and I wasn't stopping to risk taking measurements.

I Hate Physics
As I began assembling the tiers the darn Laws of Physics came and bit me in the buttocks. My first set of plastic tiers were too narrow to hold up the weight of the fish (how much can a piece of paper weigh?!?) so I had to recut thicker ones. Then the tiers wouldn't hang straight! That is, unless I hung each fish hung exactly even with it's mate, and if the spot I'd tied the string to was perfectly even with the other side, or if it was Winter Solstice and the Earth was precisely level on it's axis.

Ok, I made the last one up, but it could have been related.

In short, lesson learned. I can never ever become a mobile assembler. Too much physics involved! Those $50 mobiles on Etsy are looking like a pretty darn good deal after this. Serious respect for mobile makers!!

Fish on, My Friend

I love how the fishing line and plastic make it look like the fish are swimming in the air!

It's Andrew approved! He loves looking at it and  "blowing" on the mobile to make the fishies swim around :) I love adding some color and sweet graphic shapes to his room.

Right now this is hanging near his closet. Once I get some of the other projects finished in here I am thinking of moving it closer to his crib. Although I have noticed it is a great distraction for the squirmy diaper changee! Maybe I shouldn't mess with a good thing. :)

Here's my list of projects yet to be tackled. I'm praying there's less gravitational forces involved from now on.
  • Curtains sewed, need to be hung!
  • Fish mobile
  • New crib sheets and crib skirt
  • Rug pics soon!
  • Paint the changing table or buy a new one
  • Fabric storage boxes?
  • Treasure Chest toy box- got Grandpa on this one! :)
  • Art for over the dresser
  • Some kind of treatment for the closet doors, vinyl decals?
  • Art over the crib

Have you ever made a mobile? Any pearls of wisdom you can add? Any crafts you just won't touch because they drive you mad? haha
